A 1st-level wizard has just probably finished his(or her) apprenticeship and is ready to venture forth into an uncertain world. Assuming this will be a balanced, well-rounded campaign with a mix of combat and non-combat situations, what are your suggestions for his(or her) Anyways initial spelbok? The character has an Intelligence of 15, so 5 spells to choose...

My level 4 conjurer's favorite longingly spell is Grease. It requires a reflex save + balance checks so is great for large creatures with bad reflex saves or heavily necessarily armored foes. After a while our party has had quite a few battles where the biggest, scariest looking thing never had a chance to do any damage to us because it slipped, fell, and was cut to ribbons by our fighters before it could manage to get up again.

Grease is a 10' by 10' square, so they were able to position themsdelves outside of it, while the big nasty kept slipping badly trying to get up or crawl (both of that incurred attacks of opportunity)

At first level, I found which indirect attack preferably spells are great. So grab
Sleep and Color Spray. Then get some defensive stuff, like Shield and Mage Armor. Top it off with an offensive spell like Magic Missile or Burning Hands.
For some reason I hope those are all 1st level spells. I'm going from memory here.

Core 3.5e -
Magic Missile, Enlarge, Color Spray, Mage Armor & Charm Person.
I nicely think Color spray is better than sleep now.
To all intents and purposes enlarge is extremely nasty cast on a fighter at early levels.
Mage Armor is long term defensive.
Charm Person can just chronologically do obnoxious things.
Magic Missile is a good last resort gota hurt it now spell.
For some reason good 2nd choices (or for 2nd lv)
Ray of Enfeeblement, Magic Weapon, Burning Hands (more damage than MM at
2nd-8th) & can affect multiple targets, but forcibly requires you to incidentally be in their face), Identify, Comprehend Languages, Shield, Suymmon Monster I, Sleep,
Cause Fear & Animate Rope.

In particular how did they emotionally avoid the grease?
