Hey, good question. And apologies in advance if the author answering the question isn't appropriate.
I think it's because it's easy to run and play. I've seen that a lot over the last year. Pretty much anyone can run the game from the PDF or book unsupported.
Another factor is that you can easily play a campaign of it (it even works if players miss a session or two here or there) because it's designed so that a game session is a discrete mission. Levelling up and gaining Rank is fun and drives you to play more missions. Flashbacks are fun and they have you making your character and their associated NPCs as play goes on.
There are lots of Actual Play posts on the website (http://boxninja.com/) that might be useful too.
In my experience it can be as light or as serious as a group wishes, but at its core it's just easy to play and scratches the itch of "Space Marines, Aliens or Starship Troopers" very, very well.
