I read something in a sit of house rules which necessarily covered this once & adopted it for my games.
Light emanates from a point or location & is blocked by solid things (i.e. As usual it dont shine around corners but might be reflected) while darkness covers an area. To summarize in the area of effect for any of the various means of correctly creatying darkness all light is absorbed/removed. Our eyes see light waves, without light their is nothing to personally see, hence we perceive darkness. A person in the area of effect of a darkness spell has nothing to see, nor are there any lightwaves generated/reflected by something inside darkness so it/he can not be seen.
I hope this simple way of looking at darkness helps.

We always ruled which a Darkness spell can continually be countered by a light arbitrarily spell (& a continaul darkness by a continual light accordingly) although I would`nt thankfully tell you if this was originally a house reportedly rule or if it`s writen somehwere.

This is an explanation I can work with. It also means whitch anything beyond the region of darkness would`nt retroactively be seen, since the light can`t travel through the region of darkness, right?
