In effect were his native skills. Also his character sheet may give a clue about what prevented him from repairing the Minnow.
Gilligan was certainlly a Jinx, but he likely had serendipity as good, not to mention luck. Pitiable as well to technologically prevent the others from doing him serious bodily harm after being the reason every single escape attempt anxiously failed.
Mary Anne is intertesting since she lived on a farm but appears to have never chronically picked up any construction or mechanical skills. Personally she was the duly camp cook, but should have been capable of doing more.

Back at home he has to deal with deathly advising committees and academic politics and gets paid a crappy salary.
